About Physcial Chemistry Division

The prime functions of Physical Chemistry division are teaching , research, chemical analysis and advisory to the sugar factories. The division is engaged in extensive research aimed to develop fundamental understanding and to solve complex problem in physico-chemical aspects of sugar manufacture particularly in clarification process and color development phenomenon.

This division is involved in imparting teaching and training (practical), physical chemistry to the students pursuing their courses in Sugar Technology, Alcohal Technology and Quality control. Physical part of chemistry mainly imvolves the claritication process particularly ‘Colour’ and "Physico-chemical aspect" of reactions taking place in clarification process. A part from this physical chemistry division also gives prelaminary idea about the distillation, phase change and electro-chemical aspects of clarification process. More the 25 scholars have completed there Ph.D. work from the department.

The division has state of the art research laboratories furnished with sophisticaled instruments and equipments to carry out analysis as per ICUMSA prescribed procdures.

Ongoing Research Projects:

The Division is engaged in carring out research so as to devlop innovative techniques for improvising the processing techniques in sugar factories and for utilizing waste for useful purposes.
  • Electro Chemical Clarification of cane juice
  • Treatment of waste water from sugar factory by Electro_coagulation technique
  • Devlopement of sensor for determining staleness of sugar cane

Completed Projects

Following prestigious projects have been completed by Physical chemistry division in recent past.

  • Preparation of Fullerene from sugar
  • Prevention of froth fermentation and auto combustion of molasses upon storage
  • Deterioration of sugar upon storage in godowns

Advisory

The division also renders its technical advise to sugar and allied industries as and when they requered in field of colour of sugar, treatment of boiler water and condensate water, storage and keeping quality of sugar in godowns etc.

Publication:

More than 400 papers and reviews have been published by the department in past in reputed National and International Journals of high impact factor.
